There are two types of search engine marketing: SEO and SEM
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and that is your earned search. SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, and that is your bought search.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is your earned searches. It focuses on growing visibility in organic search engine results instead of paying for advertisements. SEO uses techniques to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in the search engines.
SEM
SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. It includes SEO, but SEM goes beyond SEO. SEM includes other marketing strategies. SEM will often include paid traffic and display advertising on the search engines. The most well-known method for SEM is using Google AdWords.
